#100awesomedays no.28 – our olive trees

Our son is visiting this weekend. What a blessing! We are so proud of him! Yesterday he chose some Karoo Moon from the shelves and I quickly crocheted him a beanie. Something to keep him warm and make him think of home. He chose a dark olive colour, the colour of his eyes. It always amazes me how ordinary things remind me of scriptures. When I saw the name of the colour, Dark Olive, I thought of Psalm 128:3 – Your wife will be like a fruitful vine within your house; your children will be like olive shoots around your table. (Psalm 128:3 NIV)

Our children are like olive shoots. Why olive shoots? Well think of the significance of olives in Biblical times. It provided food, oil for medicinal and culinary purposes and eventually, wood for furniture. In the same way, our children bring purpose to our lives. But to raise these little olive trees into big trees that live out the purpose God has for them, is a challenging task. Luckily we have a promise we can hold on to:

Start children off on the way they should go, and even when they are old they will not turn from it. (Proverbs 22:6 NIV)

Be encouraged today if you are a parent. Keep on doing the right things. Keep on praying. Say no when you must. Keep on setting the right Godly example. In the end, your child will return to the way you pointed out and then he or she will not depart from it again.
